Smoke Alarms

SYDNEY’S BEST FIRE PROTECTION SERVICES

Smoke alarms are critical fire safety devices designed to detect smoke and provide an early warning of potential fire hazards. By sounding an alarm at the first sign of smoke, these life-saving devices give occupants valuable time to evacuate safely and minimise fire-related risks.

As a fundamental component of fire protection systems, smoke alarms are essential for homes, commercial buildings, and other structures. They play a vital role in compliance with Australian fire safety regulations, ensuring that properties meet legal requirements and provide a safer environment for residents and occupants.

Regular maintenance and testing of smoke alarms are crucial to ensuring their reliability.

Cost of Smoke Alarms

They are relatively inexpensive and easy to install, making them an accessible fire safety measure for most homes and buildings. Many countries and jurisdictions have laws and regulations requiring smoke alarms to be installed in homes and other structures. In Australia, the rules for homes vary depending on the state or territory. However, there are some general guidelines and regulations that apply across most of the country.

All new homes or homes that undergo significant renovation are required to have hard-wired (240v) alarms installed. The alarms must be installed on every level of the home in accordance with the Australian Standard AS 3786-2014 and Building Code, and they must be interconnected so that if one alarm sounds, all alarms sound.

Must comply with the Australian Standard AS 3786-2014. In most states and territories, it is required that the alarms be either hardwired or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery.

They must be installed in a location that provides early warning in the event of a fire i.e between kitchen and sleeping areas. They should be installed on the ceiling, at least 30 centimetres away from any wall or light fitting. In addition, they should not be installed in locations where they may be obstructed, such as near curtains or furniture.

They must be tested and maintained regularly to ensure that they are functioning properly. It is recommended to test smoke alarms regularly by pressing the test button. The battery in smoke alarms with a removable battery should be replaced at least once a year.

Landlords are responsible for ensuring that they are installed and maintained in rental properties. Tenants are responsible for reporting any faults to the landlord.
